Removing white calcium scale from pool tile in New Braunfels, TX

How to Remove Calcium Scale From Pool Tile

See a white, crusty line around your pool at the waterline? That is calcium scale. It is very common in New Braunfels because our water is so hard.

What Causes Calcium Scale?

Hard water has a lot of calcium in it. When pool water evaporates, the calcium stays behind. Over time, it builds up on the tile. High pH and high alkalinity make it build up faster.

Two Kinds of Scale

  • Calcium carbonate: white and flaky. This is easier to remove.
  • Calcium silicate: gray-white and very hard. This often needs a pro.

How to Remove Light Scale

  1. Lower the water level a little, or work right at the waterline.
  2. Use a pool tile cleaner or scale remover made for pools.
  3. Scrub with a stiff brush or a pumice stone made for pool tile.
  4. Rinse and check your water balance after.

Be careful: Do not use a pumice stone on glass tile or painted tile. It can scratch them. Test a small spot first.

When to Call a Pro

If the scale is thick and hard, scrubbing may not work. A pro can use bead blasting, which uses fine beads to remove scale without hurting the tile.

How to Stop Scale From Coming Back

  • Test calcium hardness often. A range of about 200 to 400 ppm is common.
  • Keep pH around 7.4 to 7.6.
  • Keep alkalinity around 80 to 120 ppm.
  • Brush the tile line every week.
  • Use a scale control product if your water is very hard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use vinegar on pool tile scale?

Vinegar can help on very light spots, but pool-made scale removers work better on real buildup.

Does scale hurt my equipment too?

Yes. Scale can build up in heaters, salt cells, and pipes. That makes them work harder and wear out sooner.
