Why Is My Pool Cloudy? Causes and Fixes for Texas Pools
Cloudy water is one of the most common pool problems in New Braunfels. The good news: it almost always comes from one of a few causes, and most can be fixed in a few days. Here is how to find yours.
Cause 1: Low Chlorine
When chlorine runs low, tiny bits of dirt and early algae make the water hazy. In our summer heat, chlorine burns off fast. Test free chlorine and bring it back up.
Cause 2: High pH or Alkalinity
When pH is high in hard New Braunfels water, calcium starts to come out of the water and makes it look milky. Lower pH and keep alkalinity in range.
Cause 3: Too Much Stabilizer (CYA)
If stabilizer gets too high, chlorine works much slower, even if the test shows chlorine. The water can stay dull and cloudy. See how too much stabilizer turns a pool green.
Cause 4: A Dirty or Worn Filter
If the filter is clogged, or the sand or cartridge is worn out, it cannot catch fine dirt. Check the pressure gauge. See filter cleaning and replacement.
Cause 5: Not Running the Pump Long Enough
In summer, most pools need the pump running many hours a day to clean all the water. Short run times leave cloudy water behind.
Cause 6: Dirt, Pollen, and Rain
Cedar and oak pollen, dust, and runoff after storms can cloud the water. Run the filter longer and clean the baskets.
How to Clear a Cloudy Pool
- Test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, stabilizer, and calcium.
- Fix pH first, then raise chlorine.
- Clean or backwash the filter.
- Run the pump around the clock until the water clears.
- Brush the walls and floor.
- If it is still cloudy after 2 to 3 days, use a clarifier, or floc and vacuum to waste.
- If nothing works, have the water and filter checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my pool cloudy after I shocked it?
Shock can make water cloudy for a short time as it kills algae and dirt. Run the filter and clean it. If it stays cloudy, check pH and stabilizer.
Why is my pool cloudy but chlorine is fine?
High pH, high stabilizer, high calcium, or a worn filter can all make water cloudy even when chlorine reads okay.
How long does it take to clear a cloudy pool?
Most cloudy pools clear in 1 to 3 days once the chemistry is fixed and the filter runs nonstop.
Is it safe to swim in a cloudy pool?
It is best not to. Cloudy water can hide low chlorine and makes it hard to see swimmers on the bottom.
